Monet: When He Was Young

Come examine the early works of perhaps one of the most celebrated painters in art history! Look back at Monet's first thirty years, from his birth to when he and his family escaped to England from the Franco-Prussian War (July 19, 1870 – January 28, 1871). It was during this pivotal time that the Impressionist began to use bright colors in broken brush strokes to capture the fleeting moments of everyday life in the outdoors and its changing light. You will also see the influence of Japanese woodblock prints and its unusual visual angles on the artist's work.

The talk will include works from regional museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston; the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, in New York; the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C.; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
