Historically canals were of immense importance to commerce and the development, growth and vitality of a civilization. Transportation routes built for commerce developed slowly in the northeast and it was not until after the American Revolution that some thought was given to building of local-area canals. This presentation will cover the history of area canals, e.g., Erie, Delaware and Lehigh (D&L), and Morris Canals, why they were built, how they affected the region, how they operated, and much more. Lecture will be supplemented with photos both historic and current as well as information where canals can be visited today. This program is both in person in the library and live streaming via Zoom.
