Program Description

Event Details

A young George Washington’s visit to Barbados influenced the American Revolution. Instead of a pleasant winter trip to an idyllic tropical paradise, George becomes seriously ill and while recuperating educates himself on the island’s military defenses. Join us to learn how this “working vacation” played an important role in General Washington’s career. Meanwhile, the Declaration of Independence may have had roots in Barbados and the Treaty of Oistins. Did Thomas Jefferson lift a major chunk of that treaty as basis for the document?

This program is in person in the library only.

If you are a Mahwah resident and are participating in the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, please remember to bring your Adventure Log with you to the program to receive an attendance stamp, which can be used to earn a Summer Reading tote bag (10 programs attended) and an enamel camp mug (20 programs attended).
