Program Description

Event Details

Experience the captivating sounds of West Africa in Mahwah! Join Sean Gaskell as he performs on the kora, a 21-stringed West African harp. With years of extensive training under the guidance of renowned masters like Moriba Kuyateh, the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia, and Cisskho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal, Gaskell brings a deep knowledge of this ancient instrument. Traditionally played by oral historians called griots, the kora preserves songs that carry an 800-year legacy dating back to the founding of the Mande Empire. Gaskell has shared his musical talents at over 300 libraries and numerous schools, colleges, and universities across the United States and Canada. Don’t miss this unique cultural experience!
